Trade Union and Impact

What is Trade Union?

A trade union is a group of workers from the same trade, organization, or industry that band together to safeguard their rights, improve working conditions, negotiate wage adjustments, and communicate with management in a unified voice. It seeks to provide workers negotiating leverage over corporate or government management. Shrestha (2012) states, a trade union, through its leadership bargains with the employer or the management on behalf of the union members and negotiates labor contracts.

Karl Marx established the revolutionary theory of trade unions. This theory is also known as "the theory of class war and dialectical materialism." According to Marx, trade unions were the primary organizing centers that provided an important hub for coordinating the forces of the working classes. Marx realized trade unions as means for overthrowing capitalism.

Benefits of Trade Union to Workers

  • A worker feels extremely vulnerable when he is alone. Union allows him to realize his goals with the help of his other fellow creatures.
  •  Because the union protects the workers' economic interests and provides a suitable wage for them, it improves their economic situation by gaining better wages, bonuses, allowances, and other benefits.
  • Unions assist workers in obtaining various benefits in addition to greater earnings, such as housing, comfortable working circumstances, and so on.
  • The union also gives cash support (in some situations) in the event of sickness or termination of job.
  • The union facilitates negotiations between workers and management and serves as a mechanism for the resolution of industrial problems.
  • Employers benefit from trade unions because they unite workers and motivate them to use peaceful tactics to get their demands accepted. It reduces violent class conflicts.
  • Workers have the opportunity to participate in management and challenge any action that negatively affects them.

Conclusion

Labor unions have both positive and negative aspects. It is excellent for labor welfare. However, when it comes to increasing labor productivity or efficiency, unions become an impediment because they are solely concerned with worker benefits rather than the improvement of the factory, production, or management.

By providing historical context, the book also adds depth to our understanding of how unions have moved from Marx to being critical actors in labor negotiations. The one thing that also good to understand is the balance of their pros and cons (reach, number of articles posted etc) in exchange for time/productivity.
